Kazee vs Odoo

Kazee vs Odoo: an honest comparison for Kenyan teams

Odoo and Kazee both put several business apps under one roof. Odoo is a large suite with an open-source edition, dozens of apps and a wide partner network. Kazee is a smaller suite for businesses in Kenya and East Africa, focused on projects, team chat, sales, support and HR.

This page sets the two side by side using each company’s own published information. Where Odoo does more, we say so. Where a fact could not be confirmed on Odoo’s own site, we have left it out.

Books (Preview) records payments by M-Pesa, PayBill, bank transfer, cash, cheque or card.

Books (Preview) asks for your KRA PIN during set-up so it appears on invoices.

Who each one suits

Neither product is right for every business. A quick way to decide is to look at how much of the business you want to run in one system, and how much setup you are ready for.

  • Odoo suits businesses that want one system across a wide range of work and are ready to plan the setup, often with paid help or a partner.[4][13]
  • Odoo also suits companies that want the source code or their own servers. The Community edition is open source, and the Custom plan can run on Odoo.sh or on-premise.[6][7]
  • Kazee suits growing teams that have outgrown spreadsheets and WhatsApp groups and mainly need projects, chat, sales, support and HR. You can start with one app and add the rest when there is a real job for them.
  • Kazee also suits companies with many people who only need chat, projects and HR self-service, such as field teams, drivers and shop staff. They join on the $5 seat, while the people in sales, support and finance take a $20 seat.

Where Odoo is stronger

If any of these matter most to you, Odoo is likely the better fit today.

  • Breadth. Odoo lists 50 main applications, all included on its Standard and Custom plans. Kazee has five Live apps today, with Books in Preview and Tickets, Recruit, Performance and Budgets in early access.[4]
  • Kenyan tax integration. Odoo documents a Kenya localisation with an eTIMS integration for KRA, plus Kenyan payroll with P9 and P10 reports. Kazee does not send invoices to eTIMS today.[10][11]
  • Open source and hosting choice. Odoo has an open-source Community edition and lets the Custom plan run on your own servers. Kazee has no open-source or self-hosted edition.[6][7]
  • Ecosystem and scale. Odoo reports 28 million users, more than 21,000 partners and over 40,000 community apps. Kazee is far smaller and has no app marketplace.[12][5]
  • A free plan with unlimited users. Odoo’s One App Free plan lets any number of people use one app at no cost. Kazee’s free plan covers up to 3 people.[3]

Where Kazee is different

Kazee is not trying to be a smaller Odoo. It is built around the day-to-day work of teams in Kenya and East Africa: talking, selling, supporting customers and looking after staff.

  • Two prices by role. Kazee is free for up to 3 people. On the paid plan, people who work in CRM, Desk and Books are $20 a month each, and people who only need Chat, Spaces and People are $5. Prices are in US dollars, before VAT. A company with 10 people in sales and finance and 40 in the field pays $400 a month.
  • Team chat and calls built in. Kazee Chat has direct and group messages, voice and video calls and file sharing, on web, mobile and desktop, under the same sign-in as the other apps.
  • Kenyan payroll basics in People. Kazee People runs payroll with the statutory rates for PAYE, NSSF, SHIF and the Housing Levy, and HR can update the rates when the rules change.
  • Support from one queue. Kazee Desk brings email, SMS and live chat into one queue, with SLAs, macros, a knowledge base and CSAT surveys.
  • No implementation project to start. You register your organisation, we review it and email your admin sign-in details, and you can start on the free plan with the app you need.

How to move from Odoo to Kazee

There is no import tool from Odoo in Kazee today, so plan the move in steps rather than all at once.

  • Keep a copy. Odoo can export records as .csv or .xls files. Export what you need before you change anything.[14]
  • Start with one team. Move one job first, for example support into Kazee Desk or the whole company onto Kazee Chat, while Odoo keeps running for the rest.
  • Run side by side. Kazee does not sync with Odoo, so for a while the two run separately. Keep accounting and stock where they are until you are ready.
  • Talk to us. Book a demo or send us a message, and we can go through what your team uses today and what Kazee can and cannot take over yet.

Common questions

How do Kazee and Odoo prices compare?

Odoo lists its Standard plan at US$7.25 a user a month on yearly billing, a discount for the first 12 months, with a regular price of US$8.95. Kazee is free for up to 3 people. On the paid plan, people who work in CRM, Desk and Books are $20 a month each, and people who only need Chat, Spaces and People are $5. Prices are in US dollars, before VAT. Which costs less depends on how many of your people need full access.[1]

Does Kazee work with eTIMS?

Not today. Kazee Books is in Preview: it asks for your KRA PIN so it appears on invoices, but it does not send invoices to eTIMS. If eTIMS from your accounting system is a must, Odoo documents an eTIMS integration for Kenya.[10]

Can I import my Odoo data into Kazee?

There is no Odoo import in Kazee today. You can export your records from Odoo as files and keep them, then contact us to talk through what you want to bring across.[14]

Is Kazee open source?

No. Kazee is a hosted suite with no open-source or self-hosted edition. If you need the source code or your own servers, Odoo offers a Community edition and on-premise hosting.[6][7]

Can we use Kazee and Odoo together?

Yes, side by side. You could keep Odoo for accounting and stock and use Kazee for chat, projects, sales or support. The two do not sync today, so each keeps its own records.
